Crossroads Lost

Already, I was in my UPS uniform. The person on the desk saw me in my uniform and told me to organize a pile of postal notes and boxes. Which I did, pleasantly sorting them as the notes would be put on the walls with different colored arrangements. I had the urge to decorate more but I knew maybe not here where this is an open space where I'd be interrupted anytime. When I looked back, no one was at the front desk, and at the same time saw someone enter the shop. Quickly, I rushed into the backrooms where I thought the employees would be. No one was around the lunch room, offices, or restrooms. I peeked out the backrooms and there was a line of unattended customers until I looked at the desk and a woman with bright blonde hair who rang up a customer. Gladly, rest assured because today was my first day of work. Yet, I don't know anyone. I stand there cluelessly grinning as some of the customers glance at me. The blonde hair lady glanced at me and wording from her red lips to "help out". I went on my way to the office desks. Before I could have entered, I saw a young girl sitting behind the steel rack, used to help with unloading inside cargos. She wore blue denim shorts, a bright red hoodie, a high ponytail, and dark hair that was almost the void in her eyes. I wondered, what brought her here.

"Hello," I reached and the little girl stood up. As if she was ready to fight. "How are you?"

She thawed in disgust, almost sticking her tongue out. She ends up running away into a different background. And when she did, our boss came into the office and saw. "Who is that girl?"

"She was just sitting there when I got here." The Blonde woman replied.

"What does she want?" Boss skeptically asked. Then the Blonde woman leaned into her ear and whispered something. At the same time, I had just noticed the blonde woman's name tag that said, 'Mirna'. Boss raised both her eyebrows in surprise, while his nametag said 'Bri'. Bri got her radio and twisted one of the buttons where it made a sort of squeak sound. She said something on the radio but I couldn't hear it. I wasn't able to hear what she had said. "Get her, find the girl." Mirna rushed into the backroom while a few other co-workers came from outside. There was one last customer as Bri took Mirna's spot. I followed Mirna. And going into this backroom, it was HUGE. You would never imagine a room this size would fit behind a few offices and stores. We stood in the center while we would sense something lurking in the corner. I turned my head to the right, and I got a glimpse of the little girl in the shadows. The group of 4 split, looking for the little girl.

"Hello?" I said out loud, which echoed above. I was searching, where could she have gone?

"Elize," Mirna gestured to come her way as I turned around. "We found her." On the way back, there were chairs outside the restroom doors. Mirna led me back as she took the co-worker's place who was watching the girl. I didn't know what to do. Mirna glanced at me and said, "Wait here." She left, into the office.

There was a rack near the girl. "That," the girl stared down at the white hard floor. "Can I have it?" Puzzled, I turned my head but there was just a package of what looked like rubber bands. I didn't understand why she wanted it, or why she asked especially from breaking and entering. She just sat there with her knees bent and shoes on the chair. She was lost in her head, and I could tell she was unsettled. She got up from the chair, and she ran away.

Mirna came back. "Where did she go?" As I was about the speak, Bri interrupted.

"Where?" Bri asked.

"Well, she didn't steal anything." Mirna shrugged towards Bri and then walked out.

She came back later shortly after and she was back in the same spot as before. She was right behind me as I was processing customers' transactions on the POS. I glanced back and she scooched back. I wasn't going hurt to her, but if she thought I would, why would she be coming back? As I continue customer service throughout the day, I hear her sniffle. And when I turned back, her cheeks were rose red along with tears. Was she crying? When there was no line, I went out on a short walk, looking for ice cream to buy. Gladly, there was one nearby the UPS store I got one plain vanilla soft served and the other one both vanilla and chocolate with sprinkles. I went back to work and the girl was still there. I bent down and I held the sprinkled ice cream to her. She looked up while I tasted mine and smiled. She got her ice cream, tasted it, and smiled too. This was progress because I don't know why any of us are here. I sanitized the office desks as she stood up watching me from behind. She also got clothes and started wiping parts of the office, organizing, and sorting. I appreciated it, it was nice having to do things without being told. As it was time to close up shop, she was watching me from behind I felt her stare as she kept her distance. I left the shop changed into my regular clothes of blue pants and a powder blue T-shirt, and started walking uphill as the girl followed.

At the top of the hill, I was able to see the twilight of dusk with my family. The girl was welcomed by my family and she laughed along with my mom and grandpa. I smiled and continued to watch the clouds but the girl approached me and asked, "Can I have them?" It was the package she was talking about, which was in my back pocket. I picked it out and stared at it for a while as the girl looked up at me. I don't know if she would want these. Then I looked at her hesitantly and handed it to her. Finally, she opened the package and it had a variety of condoms. I sat her down on a chair next to one I sat in. I just somehow knew that she was going to be fine...

"We're going to regret meeting you." My grandpa said as I glanced in his direction. The girl attempted to hold her same expression, and then she walked away. I went after her.

"Hey!" I shouted, following her through the night with beautiful warm lamps that helped so much with a sight that I was most thankful for. "What you're going to do, you're going to regret." She stopped and looked at me from her side in with her big eyes.

"Like how you're going to regret me?" What? If she's going to do what I worry about what she might do with those condoms then I would regret it if I didn't stop her.

"Wait!" She just ran, but I noticed she slowed down. "We're going to regret meeting you too!" I told her. But she didn't understand. She cried as soon as she heard me then I got a hold of her.

"Er!" She tried to push me away countless times. "Don't go!"

"You regret me anyway!" She broke free as I let her go. And she ran afar where I couldn't see her. I worried because it was going to take her a long time to realize that what she was about to do wasn't for the best and I couldn't stop her anymore... I wish she'd stop.
